| There
are many good reasons why the Hungarian capital is called "Paris of
the East": The picturesque and magnificent architecture from the turn
of the century gives the city a Roman leal in some places, other places
are characterized by the Turkish area and last but not least the city was
also influenced by the Habsburgs, so Budapest offers a great variety of
cultural highlights. One of the city's attractions are the numerous warm thermal springs. The Romans quickly learned how to use them for their highly developed spa culture. Tiberius Nero, stepson of Emperor Augustus, founded a Roman town right by the springs of the Buda mountains. The ruins of Aquincum give evidence of Budapest's first steps towards becoming a "Royal Spa". In the course of the city's history many crowned heads made use of the stylish spa facilities: Frederick Barbarossa, the Hungarian Kings Sigismund and Ludwig and Edward VIII in the 20th century. Under Turkish rule lasting 150 years in the 16th and 17th century spa culture continued to flourish. Many new baths came into being that still welcome their guests today as in former times. Among them the bath of Rŕc, Rudas, the Emperor and the King bath. Today, Budapest is the only city in the world with more than 100 active thermal springs and fountains. "Savoir-vivre" does not only imply the first-class equipment of nearly 50 baths and the excellent quality standards of the hotels, but also refers to the various offers for leisure time in the Danube city. Cosy cafés invite a little chat, restaurants and the famous wine catacombs tempt to culinary pleasures. By no means should visitors miss seeing the extraordinary State Opera House. The open-air stage on the Margaret Island provides picturesque scenery for opera performances, ballet and operettas of international renown. Further attractions are the lake of Velence or Gödöllö, the former Grassalkovich Castle. Esztergom, the city of Hungarian kings and emperors coronations and seat of archbishops for more than 1000 years are also in the surrounding area. |
